Inspiration
THE MEETING OF THE 80’S WALKMAN & VR HELMETS
Orion VR: Classic Edition is at the meeting point of two ideas from two different periods.
In the late 70’s, Sony released the first portable audio tape player: the Walkman. It was a revolution, people were able to bring recorded music everywhere, with a really lightweight device and just headphones.
The walkman is now a an iconic product of the pop-culture, a symbol of freedom and portability. It was a game changer for music, but also for design.
The first editions were a perfect illustration of industrial design, with very heavy shapes. As its own success and technologies evolved, the Walkman, and later others music players, became more and more lighter, adapting their shapes to the identities of their brands and customers. After 40 years, and thousands designs iterations, we came to product like the iPod. It’s now the reference of music player, thanks to the iconic and minimalistic design by Jony Ive. The story of portable music player design starts with the Walkman and illustrates the evolution of product design in general. From this point, technological products will be conceived like art pieces.
Today a new similar object is born, the Virtual Reality Helmet. It is on its way to become an alter ego of the Walkman.
The Orion VR: Classic Edition is a tribute to the Walkman. It’s an illustration of what VR Helmets could have been if they were made in the 80’s. We can see nowadays several similar projects like the NES Classic Edition, which are testimonies of the influence of the late XXth century.
